Starting a nonprofit organization was never something I imagined for myself when I first picked up a guitar. But as my journey as a folk-rock artist evolved, so did my understanding of the power of music. It became clear to me that music can do more than entertain—it could inspire, heal, and bring hope to those who need it most. That realization, over time, led to the creation of A New Song, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing the transformative power of music to people going through difficult times across America.
The Birth of a Vision
My journey as a musician began with a deep love for folk music and artists with a message. I personally had a desire to connect with people on a spiritual level. As an Orthodox Jew, my faith is central to who I am, but I’ve always been committed to ensuring that my music is inclusive and universally spiritual. I’ve been blessed to perform in venues across New York City, sharing my blend of American roots and folk-rock music with diverse audiences. But it wasn’t until I visited my first prison that I fully understood the impact music could have on people in the darkest of circumstances. That first performance in a prison was eye-opening. I saw firsthand how the simple act of playing a song could lift the spirits of people who are often forgotten by society. The experience stayed with me, and I knew I had to do more. That’s when the idea for A New Song was born.
Creating A New Song
Creating A New Song was a leap of faith. The mission was clear: to bring hope to incarcerated individuals through the power of music. But turning that mission into a reality required dedication, resources, and a belief that music could make a real difference in people’s lives. The nonprofit’s name, A New Song, reflects the essence of what I hope to achieve. It’s about offering a fresh perspective, a new melody, and a message of redemption to those who need it most. Through intimate concerts in prisons and jails, I aim to create an environment where inmates can feel a sense of peace, connection, and hope—if only for a brief moment. My music is spiritual, not religious, which allows it to resonate with people from all walks of life, regardless of their background or beliefs.
The Power of Music in Prisons
Performing in prisons is unlike any other experience. There’s an initial sense of uncertainty when I walk into a facility—both from the inmates and from myself. I often wonder how my music, which is so deeply personal to me, will be received by people who come from such different circumstances. But as soon as I start to play, that uncertainty melts away. The universal language of music takes over, and we all become connected in that moment.
I’ve had the privilege of performing in many prisons across the United States, from New York to Florida to Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Each performance has been unique, but the reactions from the inmates are often the same: smiles, clapping, and sometimes even tears. They tell me that the music reminds them of home, of better times, and that it gives them a sense of hope for the future. Those moments reaffirm my belief that A New Song is fulfilling its mission.
Building a Future of Hope
While A New Song is still in its early stages, the impact we’ve had so far has been incredible. But there’s so much more work to be done. My dream is to expand our reach, visiting more prisons across the country and even bringing in other musicians who share the same passion for using music as a tool for healing.
One of the biggest challenges we face is funding. Traveling to prisons, especially in different states, requires resources that are often difficult to come by. That’s why I’m working towards acquiring a travel vehicle which would allow me to reach more facilities with all my equipment (and also be able to take a nap) to bring more music to those who need it. Donations and support from those who believe in our mission are crucial to making this dream a reality.
A Call to Join the Journey
As I continue to build A New Song, I’m constantly reminded of the power of community. This nonprofit isn’t just about me and my music—it’s about all of us coming together to make a difference in the lives of people who are often overlooked. If you believe in the healing power of music and want to help spread hope to incarcerated individuals, I invite you to join us on this journey. Whether it’s through a donation, spreading the word, or simply listening to our music, your support can help bring a new song to America—one of hope, healing, and redemption.
Together, we can move the world with music.
