Beyond the Bars

Finding Connection through Song

Have you ever wondered what it's really like inside a prison? Not just the walls, but the emotions that fill the space. It's a world where people feel they are forgotten by society and all alone. For many, it's a place of isolation, where hope feels distant.

I believe music can change that, even if just for a moment. My name is Gedalya, and I'm the director of A New Song USA. We travel to prisons across the U.S. to sing for inmates and staff, offering a bit of light. Music has the power to break down walls, reaching deep into the soul, reminding everyone that we're all part of something bigger.

In a place where divisions are so clear, where it’s easy to see the differences between us, I want to focus on what connects us. We are all human. We all experience pain, joy, regret, and hope. And music has this incredible ability to bring that out, to remind us that we are not alone in this journey.

Why It Matters
I believe that music can ease the mental weight that comes with being in prison. For the inmates, it’s a brief escape from the harsh realities of their daily lives. For the staff, it’s a moment to exhale, to feel appreciated. It’s amazing how a few chords on a guitar and a melody can shift the energy in a room. I’ve seen hardened faces soften, and I’ve seen people, who might never interact outside of these sessions, share a smile.

I know it might seem like a small thing, playing music for people behind bars. But sometimes, it’s the small things that make the biggest difference. A song can bring hope, even to those who feel hopeless.

What’s Mine, What’s Yours—and What That Really Means

At first glance, the phrase seems straightforward:

    “What’s mine is mine.
    What’s yours is yours.”

Clear boundaries. Respect. Integrity. It seems fair, even wise.

And yet, the Mishnah in Pirkei Avot (Ethics of Our Fathers) calls this mindset the attribute…

Music Where the Walls End: When Sound Opens the Door to the Soul

    Who Are You Making King?

One of the most honest questions I’ve ever been asked came from inside a prison.

It wasn’t dramatic. It wasn’t loud. It didn’t come from anger.
It came quietly, almost carefully, as if the person asking it had been carrying…

    Finding Connection through Song

Have you ever wondered what it's really like inside a prison? Not just the walls, but the emotions that fill the space? It's a world where people feel they are forgotten by society and all alone. For many, it's a place of isolation, where hope feels distant.

My name is Gedalya, I'm the founder and director of the charity A New Song. I travel to prisons across the country singing my original songs for inmates and staff hoping to offer a bit of light in some very dark places.

Music has the power to break down walls, reaching deep into the soul, reminding everyone that we're all part of something bigger.

"Beyond the Bars" is a collection of essays and insights about things I've learned from my travels to different facilities around the country. I'm hoping that by sharing these insights, it will give us all something to think about and hopefully help us all to have more satisfying and fulfilling lives.
