A Controversial Mission: "Bringing Hope to Prisons through Song”

Questioning My Mission
Hey everyone, it’s Gedalya back with another thought. I’ve been on quite the journey, bringing music to people who don’t usually get to hear it: prisoners. Moreover, let me tell you, not everyone is thrilled about it. But today, I want to open up about why I do it, even when it's not the most popular choice.

Am I Doing the Right Thing?
Have you ever had a moment when you questioned something you were passionate about? I certainly have. When I first started visiting prisons, I thought, “Am I doing the right thing?” After all, these are people who have made some serious mistakes—some might even say unforgivable. You see, someone close to me was once assaulted, and I remember thinking, “Would I be okay doing something positive for the person who caused that pain?” It’s not easy, and there are no simple answers. I’ve even received some tough comments online—people saying that these prisoners don’t deserve the hope I’m trying to bring them. Nevertheless, here’s the thing: we all make mistakes, don’t we? Some are bigger than others are, but we’ve all done something we regret.

Music as a Source of Hope
Many people face the consequences of their actions behind bars, reflecting on the wrong turns they’ve taken. In such situations, the opportunity for a second chance often becomes a lifeline. Most of us, given the choice, would prefer the chance to grow and make amends rather than being left to dwell on past regrets. That’s what drives my mission—not to excuse anyone’s behavior or to claim that everything can be undone, but to believe that everyone, including those who have made serious mistakes, deserve the opportunity to change for the better.

Why I Keep Going
When I bring music into prisons, I’m not just singing songs. I’m sharing hope. Music has this incredible ability to inspire, to lift people up, and to make them reflect on their lives. I’ve seen it firsthand—people who were hardened by years behind bars, suddenly moved by a simple melody or a message in the lyrics. It’s as if for a moment, they remember they’re more than just their past mistakes.

Looking to the Future
Of course, some crimes can never be undone. I’m fully aware that nothing will bring back the lives lost or heal the deepest wounds. But what I ask is this: when these people eventually return to society, how do we want them to come back? Do we want them to be stuck in their old ways, or do we want to see them change and do something good with their second chance?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Have you ever struggled with the idea of second chances? Do you think this mission is worth the effort? Share your thoughts, and let’s see where it takes us.

Thanks for reading! Only good things.
